Otto Zwarg Model 600 Maximo Reel - The model 600 Maximo reels were named after Maximo Point, the southwestern extremity of St. Petersburg, Florida - a famed fishing spot since Antion Maximo, the first settler, established a "Fish Ranche" on the point in 1843. This size 4/0 reel was built to tackle tarpon, sailfish, tuna, marlin and any other heavy saltwater game fish. The 3 7/8" diameter, 2 1/8" wide spool reel was listed in the Zwarg catalogs as capable of holding 42 yards of C enameled silk with 150 yards of No.9 linen line. This particular reel was gifted to Lloyd Garfield "Bally" Balfour, founder of the company best known for producing the vast majority of college and high school class rings, as well as championship rings for major league sports teams, given to him by "The Southern Salesman" - E.G. Fitzgerald, a company Vice President and one of the founders of the Otto Zwarg company. The tail plate is inscribed "Bally - from The Southern Salesman - Jan. 7, 1950". E.G. Fitzgerald was the Southern sales manager for the L.G. Balfour company, with this reel a gift for his then boss. The EXCELLENT MINUS condition reel features a full length foot with both the size and model number, as well as serial number D138. With "O. Zwarg Co. Inc. Maker - St. Petersburg Fla" stamped sliding oil caps, star drag and crack/chip free hard rubber side plates and just the slightest spot of rash near the inscription.
